Buckman Community Association

The Portland Marathon will take place on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024. The static map shows the race route in and around your neighborhood. Continue to scroll down to see an interactive map of the entire route. As a rule of thumb it will not be possible to drive on, or drive across, the streets used for the race until the last runner has passed the location and the traffic control devices have been removed. Vehicles will be turned away one block prior to reaching the race route.

Route Description In Your Neighborhood

The race will mainly impact the far west side of the neighborhood. Runners will enter the Buckman neighborhood by running north on SE Water Ave and following the turn to the east onto SE Stark St. Runners who reach SE Stark St prior to 12:00 noon will continue east on Stark and then turn left (north) onto SE 2nd Ave, then right (east) onto SE Ankeny St, and left (north) onto SE 3rd Ave.

From there, the route uses the pedestrian/cyclist pathway to access NE Couch St and head west across the Burnside Bridge to finish the race. Runners who reach Stark St after 12:00 noon will be turned around to run back south on SE Water Ave and use the pedestrian walkway on the south side of the Morrison Bridge to cross over into Downtown to finish the race. Runners will be in the neighborhood from 8:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Special Traffic Considerations In Your Neighborhood

The I-5 freeway northbound off-ramp onto SE Yamhill St (Central Eastside Industrial District) will be closed during the hours of the event. Those planning to enter the neighborhood by exiting northbound I-5 during that time frame will need to do so via a detour.

Eastbound and westbound traffic will be allowed across the Ross Island, Marquam, and Steel Bridges during the entire event, but there will be heavy event traffic in Downtown Portland during the hours of the event and those planning to travel in or through Downtown should expect delays.

The Burnside Bridge will always maintain one eastbound lane and one westbound lane open during the entire event, but vehicles traveling west up Burnside from the Bridge will experience delays from 7:00-8:00 a.m., including a complete temporary closure of Burnside from 7:10-7:30 a.m.

The Morrison Bridge will remain completely open for the duration of the event; however, vehicles entering Downtown from the east via the Morrison Bridge will experience delays maneuvering in that area from 7:10-7:45 a.m.

Westbound traffic flow exiting the Hawthorne Bridge onto SW Main in Downtown will be temporarily closed from 7:10-7:25 a.m. for the start of the race, but the bridge will otherwise not be impacted. The best way to enter Downtown if arriving from the east anytime before 8:00 a.m. will be to use the I-5 Freeway (Marquam Bridge) and use the 4th Ave exit (1B). The Marquam Bridge (entrance via SE 5th Ave) is also the best way to exit Downtown if heading east during the same time.

It will not be possible to drive on or across SE Water Ave anywhere between SE Stark St and SE Clay St during the hours of the event.

"No Parking" Streets & Driveway Access Along Route

The interactive map below shows the entire race route. Zoom in to see the exact streets that will be used for the race. All streets that are used for the actual race will be posted "No Parking" from 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30 to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 1. If your home or business is located on the actual race route, please note that any vehicles parked on the street during the indicated hours will be courtesy towed. Towed vehicles will be taken to the closest possible street that is not posted as No Parking.

"No Parking" enforcement will also be in effect in instances where one-way streets run into the street used for the actual race. If your home or business is located on a one-way street that intersects the race route, you will not be able to park your vehicle within one block of the race route from 2:00 p.m. on Saturday to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. If your car is towed, please call 503-823-0044.

Because it will not be permissible to drive on the streets used for the race while runners are present, residents and businesses whose driveways access the race route will not be able to pull their vehicles into/out of their driveways during the closures; they should instead plan to park their vehicles on a nearby street that is not located on the race route. In your neighborhood, the streets that will be used for the race and will therefore be posted "No Parking" and inaccessible to resident and business driveways are:

  • SE Water Ave between SE Clay St and SE Stark St
  • SE Stark St between SE Water Ave and SE 2nd Ave
  • SE 2nd Ave between SE Stark St and SE Ankeny St
  • SE Ankeny St between SE 2nd Ave and SE 3rd Ave
  • SE 3rd Ave between SE Ankeny St and NE Couch St

Vehicles approaching these streets will be stopped and turned around one block prior to reaching the street until the course has been cleared of runners and re-opened.

Neighborhood Cheer Challenge

Does your neighborhood association want to get involved with the marathon and make some money? All neighborhood associations (including those that are not on the actual race route) are invited to participate in the Neighborhood Cheer Challenge. Here's how it works: If your association decides to participate, you will be assigned a spot on the race course to take over and demonstrate your neighborhood's personality. You are encouraged to bring signs, play music, decorate, and most importantly CHEER on the runners and help them have an unforgettable experience.

After the race, runners will vote on their favorite groups and the top five neighborhood associations will win $500 each, with the first place group taking home the grand prize of $1,000. There is no limit or requirement on the number of people who need to participate, and there is no fee to participate. To sign up your neighborhood, email us at info@portlandmarathon.com.
